I'll never forget hat wonderful sound and ensuing aroma of my Mother's electric percolator bubbling in the kitchen downstairs as I got ready for school on a winter morning. I always wondered as a little kid exactly what magic elixir was brewing inside that metal pot with the little glass bubble on top that got my Mother moving so briskly around the house in the morning. Of course I know now that it was percolated coffee, which is also my favorite method of making coffee at home.
WHY PERCOLATED COFFEE IS SO RICH
Coffee machines of all types are available today, from drip-coffee machines to Espresso devices, to single-serve brewers, and we feature the 'best of the rest' on our Website. But as good as those machines are with great features and advanced technologies, the simple yet indefatigable electric Percolator is tough to beat.
The main reason that percolated coffee is so good is because percolators run water back through the grounds several times, which makes for an excellent tasting and bold Cup O' Joe.
Electric percolators heat the water until steam starts to rise. The pressure from the steam sends the hot water up through a steel tube that is about the circumference and length of a long straw. The now perfectly hot water (about 200 degrees Fahrenheit ) flows to the top of the attached steel filter. It then drips down in a spread-out pattern over the coffee grounds that are in the filter.
The “water-coffee” continually drips down and is then pushed up the tube again. After several runs through the percolator, the coffee is done and the machine will alert you to that fact. Some electric percolators have auto-stop timers built into the unit; other simply show a red light indicating the process is finished.
